It will be a good night. Ever since I moved to Argentina, things have been going well. I have a girlfriend, a son and I'm back to the Dexter I once was. Back on track with Harry's code. Renewed the ritual.
I'm living the dream. 'Viva Argentina.'
Though tonight will be easy, I am nervous. Not because of the kill, but something else. But it can't possibly be. I shake my mind off it and continue driving.
I'm approaching the house. The lights are off, as I hoped. I park my car, get everything I need and walk to the back. I check the door. It's open.
Thank you, neighborhood. Not that the door would stop me, it just saves time.
I sneak inside, making no noise. I reach the bedroom door, slowly open it and walk in. There he is. Sleeping.
“Night night” I say as I slip the needle in his neck. Soon he will be permanently sleeping. I drag him to my car and throw him in the back, and drive to the kill room I've set up.
Later I arrive at the old library. I found it fitting, my playmate happens to be a librarian. During the day, at least. His night activities are pretty similar to mine. Only he kills the innocent.
I set everything up, all is in order. The photos of his victims are up, he's on the table, plastic wrapped. There are some things that don't change. I put on my apron, plastic sleeves and latex gloves before I walk over to the table next to the door, where I have my knife set. I grab a small one, move over to his head and give him a slap in the face.
“Wake up, Jorge.”
He gives me an angry look and starts speaking Spanish. And then he adds: “No English.”
“Ssh ssh.. I know you speak English. You can cut the bullshit.”
“Who are you? Why are you doing this!?”
“Where are my manners, I didn't introduce me! My name is Dexter Morgan. And as for why I am doing this, basically because.. I want to.” I answer with a smile. “And also, because you..” I point my finger at him. “.. Have been a bad boy.” I point at the photos.
He stumbles over his words. “No.. I.. I never.”
I smile softly at him and nod. “Yes, you have. And not once, no.”
I cut his cheek open and take a drop of his blood and put it on the slide. I have returned to this part of the ritual. A new me, with some of the old methods. He grunts in pain.
“It was an accident!”
I chuckle. “Sure it was.” I push a gag in his mouth, his eyes widen from fear and I plunge my knife into his chest.
There it is. That feeling. As if a breeze passes through and relieves me of my stress. For a moment, I am not thinking about anything or anyone.
I let the calm feeling take me. A few seconds later I grab my bone saw and start dismembering the body.
After I have taken down the plastic sheets and put everything into the heavy duty garbage bags, I drive to my boat and drop Jorge Rivero off in the ocean.
As I drive home, the feeling returns. I'm nervous again. It gets worse as I get closer to our house. I park my car on the driveway and take a deep breath and go inside. Hannah is waiting for me, watching TV on the couch. She looks behind her and smiles as she sees me walking in. I smile back, let my kit slide down to the floor and sit next to her, putting my arm around her.
“And? How was it?” She asks.
“It was.. Good. I needed it.”
She kisses my forehead. “I'm happy for you.”
I smile at her, trying to get rid of the feeling.
She frowns. “Is something wrong?”
“Not wrong, no. Actually.. Things are.. Very right.. Hannah, I.. I have to tell you something.”
She looks a little concerned. “What is it?”
“Ever since I can remember I've been this empty shell. This monster wearing a mask. I had no feelings about anything. Over the years, I have acquired certain feelings about.. People and things.. I discovered what it is like to feel remorse, or grief, even happiness. And then I met you. You have made me feel so much more than I have ever felt. My point is...”
I get down on one knee.
“... Will you marry me?”
